College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Melo Trimble and Jake Layman each had a big first half to help No. 14 Maryland in a 75-59 win over Michigan State. Trimble scored 21 of his 24 points in the opening half, while Layman added 13 of his 23 over the first 20 minutes. Layman also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds for the Terrapins (17-2, 5-1 Big Ten), who have won three straight. The Spartans (12-6, 3-2) had their three-game winning streak snapped, a run that started after a double overtime home loss to Maryland on Dec. 30. Branden Dawson paced Michigan State with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Costello chipped in 12 points. Both teams had trouble ramping up the offense during Marylands win in East Lansing. The Terps led 17-14 at the half in that one, but their offense appeared to be much more fluent on Saturday thanks to Trimble and Layman. The Spartans got out to a 10-5 lead after Costello and Dawson each contributed four points to an 8-0 run. Layman then scored the final seven points of a 9-0 spurt for Maryland as it regained control. Trimble got it going shortly thereafter, scoring 13 straight for the Terps -- including three consecutive 3-pointers -- to help them grab a 27-16 advantage. He closed the half with a vicious crossover of Lourawls Nairn Jr., followed by a 3-pointer that sent Maryland into the locker room with a 40-26 lead. Trimble did not get on the scoresheet in the second until the 11-minute mark, but his trey gave the Terps a 60-40 lead. The Spartans could not generate much offense against Marylands stingy defense as the Terps claimed the season sweep of their new Big Ten rival. Game Notes Trimble went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first half ... The Spartans were limited to 3-of-17 shooting from 3-point range ... Maryland scored 20 points off 12 Michigan State turnovers ... The Spartans had a 38-20 edge in the paint. Achraf Hakimi Jersey . Thomas Delaney Jersey .J. -- Pete Carroll said it was the suspension of linebacker Bruce Irvin last spring that finally got the attention of the rest of the Seattle Seahawks that they needed to be taking their commitment to the team more seriously. The Toronto Maple Leafs hope they find more comfort at home than they did during their one-game road trip. They open a three-game stretch at Air Canada Centre against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night looking to erase the memory of a humbling 6-2 loss at Buffalo over the weekend. You can watch all the action LIVE on TSN4. Coverage begins at 7:30pm et. The Sabres entered Saturdays contest averaging 1.22 goals and 22.9 shots - both of which rank last in the NHL - and proceeded to torch the Maple Leafs for season highs in goals and shots with 35. We didnt play very well, coach Randy Carlyle told the Leafs official website. Im very disappointed in the way we played. Very frustrated the way we played. Toronto (9-7-2) has lost two in a row, totaling three goals after scoring 16 during the three-game win streak that preceded the defeats. Weve been playing some very good hockey and I think for our team the bottom line is we have to move forward, defenseman Dion Phaneuf said. Its no reason to sit in there and panic about it. We didnt play well enough, hold our head high for next week. Tonights over, theres nothing we can do about it, we move forward. The Leafs will try to do so against a typically stingy Predators team thats succeeding through its defensive play. Nashville (11-4-2) has allowed fewer than 30 shots on goal iin the last four games and 11 of 17 times this season.dddddddddddd The Predators 2.0 goals allowed per game is tied for second in the league. I was happy to see the way we came out and played defensively, coach Peter Laviolette said following a 2-1 victory over Winnipeg on Saturday - the 400th of his career. We kept pushing, and even when the game was tied, we were throwing shots at the net. James Neal scored his ninth goal of the season. Rookie Filip Forsberg will be looking to get back on track after having his six-game goal streak snapped. The Predators also play at Ottawa on Thursday before returning home. Itll be nice to have a break and go up north and east to play some Canadian teams, center Mike Ribeiro said. Its always nice to play teams like the Leafs ... Well take it one game at a time, but we know we have to play better against those teams if we want to win. Pekka Rinne will likely start for Nashville. Hes posted a 1.92 goals against average in 15 games this season, but allowed four goals on 26 shots in a 4-0 loss in his last matchup with Toronto on Oct. 10, 2013. Rinnes counterpart is again expected to be Jonathan Bernier, who made 36 saves in that contest and is 8-2-0 with a 1.91 GAA in 10 career starts against Nashville. The Predators have won two of the past three meetings with the Leafs.
